In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “When Childhood Ends.”
Having been born with Spina Bifida one could argue I had to grow up immediately from birth. I was born with a hole in my spine. That is what Spina Bifida means in Latin (Split Spine).
My first surgery of life was at one day old. Since that time we have lost count of how many surgeries I have actually had. We figure it has to be somewhere around forty.
Now, truth be told, I have hardly ever gone to any surgical procedure looking like an adult. I am usually a panicked, crying mess. I don’t do well with surgeries ever since I had an out of body experience with one. I may write more on that someday, but for now let me return to today’s post.
My point to this is there are a lot of people who go through things nobody may have any clue they are occurring. I have dealt with hospitalizations from day one. Someone else may be experiencing some type of physical or mental abuse. Still someone else may be dealing with not knowing where they belong.
All these things and so many more can happen at any age of childhood too. There are millions of children in the world who go through hard experiences. Hunger, homelessness, abuse of many types, even a life-changing birth defect, all of these can cause a child to have to grow up more quickly than they should.
The Bible says we all must put away childish things. Although, some children must put away their innocence and childhood earlier than others. Some adults have a hard time when they have to grow up so fast that they may slip back into childhood from time to time. That is definitely me!
I am an almost-forty cartoon watching, run through sprinklers, wanting to relive my childhood in tractors guy. I guess when you boil it down, some of us never really do grow up. And guess what, that’s okay! I don’t think a person should ever lose the ability to be a child and play. Growing up doesn’t require losing fun! So, be an adult, take responsibility, but at the same time never forget to be a kid and laugh throughout life.
