You want to know the secret to greatness? I can sum it up in one word– FAIL. That’s right, F-A-I-L, FAIL.
I have failed a lot in my life. And it’s interesting to me, the things at which I have failed, I now want to do the most.
I failed a literary class at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minnesota. It was one book, one awesome, amazingly written book, that caused me to fail. I didn’t want to read it. I tried because the professor always gave us a quiz where we would have to know details, I mean, tiny, miniscule details of the book. What was the book? A River Runs Through It. Now, here I find myself awake at quarter to three in the morning and I am researching Norman Maclean and his family history and where he wrote his book. Why? Because it is now one of my all-time favorites. And why is it a favorite? Because I failed at it once.
The key to mastery, my friends, is failure!! Fail at something and if it becomes a passion you will want to succeed at it so bad you will do whatever it takes!! That college course lead me to to quit college. I went back 14 years later and I graduated Magna Cum Laude. And it all began with failure.
