We have all heard the song, Gray skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face. I have battled being depressed in my life before. I have been watching the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why and this series tackles the notion of teen suicide, bullying and depression. And it really has me thinking.
It’s not gonna be all sunshine and rainbows. Gray skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face? Seriously? Are we that callous of a world that we think we have the right to say that to anyone, anytime??! It’s not that easy and anyone who has never experienced it has no clue what they are talking about!
Put on a happy face is the most condescending thing you can say to a person who is battling feelings you have no clue about. Gray skies don’t always clear up! But, we can learn to dance in the rain. I have Spina Bifida. That is hospitslizations and feeling absolutely less than working order many days of my life. Do I ever talk about it? No. I dance in the rain. And rain can cause pain. I smile through it.
Please remember, gray skies don’t always clear up and putting on a happy face can be absolutely impossible for some people some days. So, what we as humanity need to do is work on our compassion and shutting the hell up and just listening. Life has gray skies. We shouldn’t try and deny it and say it’s all rainbows and butterflies. It isn’t! Some people live through storms we have no idea about. Let’s try some compassion because not all gray skies go away.
